How SIP Trunking Cuts a Kenyan Company's Phone Bill

Replacing analogue lines and PRI circuits with SIP trunks removes line rental, lowers per-minute rates and lets you pay only for the channels you use.

    Where the Old Bill Goes

A traditional setup charges you monthly rental for every physical line and every published number, whether or not anyone calls. Add high per-minute rates to mobiles and long distance, and a mid-sized office easily spends six figures a year on telephony it barely thinks about.

    What SIP Trunking Changes

A SIP trunk is a virtual line delivered over your data connection. You provision a number of concurrent channels — say ten — and that covers any ten simultaneous calls across all your numbers. Per-minute rates on SIP are markedly lower, on-net calls between your sites are free, and there is no per-number rental.

    Typical Savings

Across our deployments, businesses moving from analogue or PRI to SIP see their monthly telephony cost fall by 30 to 60 percent. The bigger the call volume and the more branches involved, the larger the saving, because inter-branch calling collapses to zero.

    What to Get Right

    • Size the channels to your busy-hour call count, not your headcount
    • Keep your numbers by porting them to the SIP carrier
    • Add a second carrier so one outage does not take the phones down
    • Check the network — QoS and enough upstream bandwidth for the codec you choose
